Welcome to the Gliese 581g Project. This site is an archive designed to catalogue and keep the history of Gliese 581g—a world that never was.

 

On September 29 2010, it was announced that scientists had discovered a new planet orbiting the star Gliese 581. This planet was said to be in the 'habitable zone' around the star, its potential for life sparking immediate media attention.

 

For the next 4 years, the contested existence of Gliese 581g produced countless articles and videos, as well as inspiring a range of creative works named in its honour. On July the 3rd, 2014, further investigation concluded that Gliese 581g was nothing more than 'an artefact of stellar activity', which caused the incorrect detection of the planet.

 

This site exists not to document a 'mistake', but to bring together the false history of Gliese 581g, as a testament to our hopefulness for worlds beyond our own. The links on this site will gradually go dead as the false planet's history is lost to time, until this page is all that remains.
